A Star in the Making
04.07.2008The latest horse out of the Mark Ronson stable, Leon Jean Marie combines funk and pop to form some of the catchiest pop nuggets I've heard in recent years. If the Ronson pedigree is anything to swear by, then Leon Jean Marie will be topping the charts this summer.
We spoke to Leon about opening for Amy Winehouse and the joys of Glastonbury Festival.
Three's A Crowd – Hi Leon, where are at you at the moment?
Leon Jean Marie - I'm at Universal in someone's office at the moment, so it's a bit weird...
TAC - Yeah, put your feet up on the table, make yourself at home.
LJM - Yeah maybe I should leave a few notes around the place...
TAC - So you opened for Amy Winehouse recently, what was that like?
LJM – Incredible. Actually it was like catching up with an old friend. I met her when she was recording Valerie in New York, so it was good to see her again. She's really cool – very down to earth and not showbizzy at all which is really refreshing.
TAC – You're playing Glastonbury this year, are you looking forward to it? First time?
LJM - Last year was my first time and it was incredible. Apparently this year it's going to be sunny, but I don't believe it. There's going to be no camping for me; last year I nearly drowned in my own tent.
TAC - Are you a long time festival goer then?
LJM - No actually, last year was the first time I've ever gone to a proper festival I went to the Lovebox weekender, but that was the first time I'd gone to a legendary one like Glastonbury.
TAC – Reading your biography, you seem to have had a bit of a rough time in the past, falling out with your parents and sleeping rough. Do you regret any of that or would you say it was character building?
LJM - I completely embrace it. In some weird way if it wasn't for that I wouldn't be in the at position I'm in now.
