DIY Manicure

18.08.2008

Every girl likes to be pampered and a manicure is one of life’s pampering necessities. But it shouldn’t always mean forking out at a salon. Sometimes it’s not such a bad thing to resort to a bit of DIY so here’s how to give yourself the ultimate manicure without stepping foot into a salon.

Before doing anything, remember that you won’t want to touch anything for about half an hour so you could stick on your favourite show or make sure you won’t get bored waiting for the nails to dry. Trim the nails first. Then file them in one direction rather than back and forth. Soak your hands in warm water.

Be patient, the manicurist would be. Add some petals, candles and a touch of soothing music to get into the spirit of it. After the soaking very gently push back your cuticles and lightly trim any excess skin. Apply a moisturiser all over the hands, nails and cuticles and if you have a special nail moisturizer massage it into the base of the nail.

Now for the painting. Apply a thin coat of basecoat and wait until it’s completely dry. We love Sally Hanson Age Correct Double Duty which is great for both base and Ttop coat.

Next add the colour. For something bold we love the MAC Swinger collection or Revlon’s Midnight affair – navy nails are very hot this season. For something a little more subtle Essie’s Happily Ever After is adorable in pink and perfect for summer.

When applying be careful not to drown the nail with big gloopy dollops as they’ll end up uneven. Apply in thin strokes and add another layer afterwards if it’s too thin.

Finish with top coat; either with the same as the base or try Sally Hanson Mega Shine Extended wear top coat for serious shine and chip resistance.

Now, be patient and don’t touch anything for ten minutes. Sit back and enjoy your perfect nails and your oh-so personal pampering session.
